Our Learning

Our aim is to provide a broad, balanced curriculum for all our children and we strive to ensure that each child has the opportunity and guidance to achieve her/his full potential.

The first years at school are so important in forming a child’s feelings about education that we focus not only on what we teach and how we teach it, but crucially, how it impacts on our learners.

We aim to make the teaching and learning at Odessa both hands-on and fun!

We want the children who come to our school to develop a positive self image and have the confidence to become a purposeful, eager learner who will want to continue learning throughout life.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum

The curriculum for children in our nursery and reception classes has a focus on 3 prime areas.  These are…

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language (focusing on Speaking, Understanding, Listening and Attention)

They will also develop skills and knowledge in 4 specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

The children have opportunities to access all these areas of learning both indoors and outdoors and engage in active learning.  They have a combination of independent and focussed activities and are encouraged to explore their environment, develop their skills and learn through play.

The Curriculum at Key Stage One

The children in Year One and Year Two follow the National Curriculum.

The Curriculum at Odessa is taught through half termly topics with ideas and activities developing from the theme and its chosen books.

Children have a combination of adult led and independent tasks.  They will also work individually, in small groups and as a whole class.

At Odessa we work hard to ensure that children are given the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need through a range of approaches including…

  • Role play and Drama
  • Investigation and Enquiry
  • Problem solving and Reasoning
  • Creative Activities

At Odessa we follow the CLPE’s Power of Reading for our language and literacy teaching and learning.

It engages teachers and children in the literacy curriculum through the use of high quality texts.  It is an approach that is creative, engaging and develops a love of literacy.

Alongside the Power of Reading, our children follow the Letters and Sound phonics scheme.

For more information on the teaching and learning of each year group, please see the newsletters on the home page or in the ‘School Information’ Section.

Through our teaching, we encourage the children to build their confidence, be motivated and determined but ultimately to establish a life-long love of learning and a positive attitude to school.
